Beat the Brain’s Negativity Bias and Fill Yourself with Calm Strength, Confidence, and Joy

The Brain is like Velcro for Bad Experiences and Teflon for Good

We suffer some misfortune—big or small, real or imagined—and the pain or humiliation sticks with us for hours, days, or even years afterward. “The mind is like Velcro for negative experiences,” psychologist Rick Hanson is fond of saying, “and Teflon for positive ones.”

Michael Bergeisen

This speaks to how, because of the negativity bias, the good facts i.e. positive/beneficial experiences we do have, go mostly unnoticed. Those that do register, are fleetingly held in our awareness. Even the more meaningful good facts are not registered in ways that they can be to significantly rewire our brains for happiness.

Your Mind: Best Ally or Greatest Adversary?

I have come to the conclusion that the greatest obstacle to getting what we really want in life is not the other party, as difficult as he or she can be. The biggest obstacle is actually ourselves.”

I help my clients and can help you get to yes with yourself by offering breakthrough, research-based tools to help you strengthen the part of your brain that serves you and quiet the part that causes your suffering.  Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could handle life’s challenges with a more positive mindset, and less stress?

Are you ready to tap into the power of Positive Neuroplasticity to increase your Mental Fitness*?

Mental Fitness

Mental fitness‘, ‘mind fitness’ or ‘resilience’ — are the more common names given to this capacity of ours to handle life’s challenges in a way where your needs are met, you experience authentic positive emotions and grow inner resources – minus the suffering. Coming out on top of the mountain (challenge) more emotionally balanced and mentally fit can be your reality.

Research with 500,000 participants has shown [level of mind fitness]* to be the best predictor of how happy you are and how well you perform relative to your potential.

Shirzad Chamine, researcher, author & founder of Positive Intelligence

You have 3 Integral Super Powers

An Integral Coaching and facilitation approach helps you apply 3 discoveries, regarding engaging the mind in optimal ways, — mindfulness being ground zero and present in the other 2 ways. The good news is that you don’t need prior mindfulness training to engage these practices and an implicit benefit of Positive Neuroplasticity Training is increased mindfulness.

Working with me, as your coach and/or positive neuroplasticity trainer, you will become proficient in the use of the following learning tools:

  • Integral Awareness
  • Integral Inquiry
  • Integral Journaling

The Power of 3

When we work together, our one-on-one or group work is deeply grounded in 3 crucial ways to engage the mind. These 3 ways have been consistently identified by philosophers. contemplative practitioners and neuroscientists – even as they use different metaphors to illustrate them.

3 Ways to Engage the Mind*

Let Be, Let Go, Let In
3 Ways to Engage the Mind

If we use the metaphor of “The Mind is Like a Garden,” we can witness the garden, pull weeds, and plant flowers. Let be, Let go, Let in.

Rick Hanson, Phd

These 3 ways to engage the mind form the basis of the practices that will help you be with what is present in a Green Zone way, responsive — so you can let go of old habits of mind (pull weeds) and plant flowers. We do the latter by enriching and installing the beneficial experiences we have in ways that grow inner strengths to match challenges we are facing.

You have come to the right place for help and support with life’s challenges so you can get more of your needs met — to consistently feel safer, more satisfied and more connected.

aneesah wilhelmstätter

Even as our work is grounded in cutting edge research from neuroscience, positive psychology and performance science, amongst others… integrated with some of the most relatable mindfulness practices from contemplative wisdom traditions, I am committed to helping you figure out how you might make them your own best practices.

All offerings through Creative Change Coaching give you the training and tools to change your brain to change your mind to change your brain for the better – yes, to change your life for the better!

3 Core Mental Muscles

Mental fitness requires 3 core muscles. Saboteur Interceptor, Self-Command, and Sage. Meditation only focuses on Self-Command, which is why it is not sustained by most. ~Shirzad Chamine

Reference: 3 core muscles

Shirzad Chamine, the originator and author of Positive Intelligence echoes Rick Hanson’s findings through factor-analysis i.e. identifying the minimal factors necessary to create positive brain change.

3 Core Muscles crucial for Positive Brain Change

The INVITATION is to engage your mind in self-directed brain change, as you chip away, like Michaelangelo did at the block of marble, removing what gets in the way of your greatest possible self and build that sage muscle as you cultivate key inner resources.

Together, we engage our minds through groundbreaking practices that take a a dozen seconds here, two dozen seconds there, with innumerable applications for every area of your life — personal relationships, performance, motivation, public speaking, conflict transformation, health, healing and well-being, learning, and much more.

Directly train all 3 core mental muscles through a process of turning everyday experiences into lasting inner strengths in integrated and authentic ways.

Yes, you have already in your hands, all the raw materials to get more of your needs met and prosper in every area of your life! Just like a painter needs a palette of the 3 primary colors (red, yellow and blue) from which to mix any color, you need only to develop these 3 primary muscles to be equal to any challenge.

These 3 powers that help you create lasting change through changing the neural structure and function of the brain are timeless realizations which are becoming increasingly mainstream.

Let’s give Nietzsche a place at the table of transformation with the metaphor of the 3 Stages of Metamorphosis. Nietzsche highlights a process of spiritual transformation that we now know is also a process of physical brain change.

Today we refer to this as the neurobiology of spiritual awakening. A spiritual orientation is not a necessary focus and at the same time, these secular practices can support your spiritual practice.

Nietzsche and The 3 Stages of Metamorphosis

Nietzsche introduces the three metamorphoses in his book Thus Spoke Zarathustra. The metamorphoses describe the process of spiritual transformation that characterises his vision of the flourishing life.

Tim Rayner
Nietzsche’s 3 Metamorphoses meets Neuroscience

The Camel

The camel asks: “What is heaviest … that I may take it upon me and rejoice in my strength” (Z, 54).

  • What are the burdens that are weighing you down?
  • What are your burdens to carry that will help you transform from ‘beast of burden’ into the king of beasts that you were born to be?

The Lion

In the lion stage, the subject of spiritual transformation must engage the dragon in mortal combat. One needs to be a lion in spirit to defeat the law of “Thou Shalt” and affirm the conditions of one’s flourishing.

Tim Rayner

The Child

“The child”, Nietzsche says, “is innocence and forgetting, a new beginning, a sport, a self-propelling wheel, a Sacred Yes” (Z, 55).

Let me help you carry the responsibility of the gifts that are yours to carry, that will connect you to your courage and let life be a celebration of your powers – a sustained act of pure affirmation. The child-like spirit knows the joy of life and the innocence of perpetual creation.

What you practice grows stronger. If you practice judgement, that will get stronger; if you practice gratitude, your heart will grow increasingly warm and free.

~Tara Brach

The Super Learning Freeway

What accounts for commonalities and remarkable correspondences across these multidisciplinary representations?

I believe these philosophers, neuropsychologists, neuroscientists, and many others as well, — no matter what framework and language they are using — are really speaking about the superpower of superpowers: LEARNING!

Learning, more accurately speaking, positive learning which entails positive changes in neural structure, (growth of new neural structure and ‘falling away’ of certain non-beneficial/negative brain connections) and functioning, —we are referencing as positive/beneficial neuroplasticity. The wise effort we are being ‘called to’ is about Learning to learn from beneficial experiences we are already having. No matter what our circumstances and conditions, most of us are sitting on a goldmine that we can stop taking for granted.

Come and discover how any practice can be held by these 3 Integral Superpowers to literally change your brain for the better!
Integral Awareness
Wisdom Through Feeling

Present moment awareness is accompanied with a 10-12 second centering practice.

Become a master practitioner of the ten second creative fitness reps, that shifts you from reactive survival stance to responsive, ‘Green Zone’ stance, so that you can hold your own even in the most stressful of circumstances.

Creative changes in brain and body that are significant enough to be picked up by MRI scans with just 10 seconds of practice.

Integral Inquiry
NAIL Freedom & Flow

Stop asking questions that drive your destiny into the ditch! `

Liberate yourself as you master the art of intention with integral inquiry. One of the power tools, ‘NAIL Freedom and Flow’ my clients have started calling “The Creative’s Swiss Army Knife.”

Any mindfully active inquiry that takes as few as 5 seconds to 30 seconds already starts intercepting the saboteur, reactive mode while helping you identify what weeds to pull.

Integral Journaling
Integral Journaling

How much support and fun do you get from your journaling practice?

With focused regenerative journaling, you will tap into your inner wisdom for authenticity so you can align your behaviours, expectations, thoughts and stance with your intentions creatively with transformational prompts, shapes, sketch-noting and mandalas.

Insight from inquiry is 20% of the ‘work’, 80% is ongoing action oriented practices, (informed by inquiry and journaling) — in other words insight-informed implementation.

What are you experiencing and how are you learning from it?

Transformational Journaling for Coaches, Therapists, and Clients

Transformational Journaling for Coaches, Therapists, and Clients

In this chapter, the author offers a simple three-step resolution-oriented practice for creating empowering visions that inspire hope and motivate people to reach beyond their current state through congruent action. Creative change is generated through an iterative process of vision-led prospecting rather than through seeking compliance. This practice is founded on the premise that creating positive emotional activation first thing helps a person experience a relaxation response that produces an indispensable and revitalized state. By first focusing on a personal vision of a Greatest Possible Self (GPS) that exemplifies self-selected character qualities congruent with their cherished values, people become open to bridging the gap between their current Stellar Self and their GPS. This can spark inspired learning, expansion, and growth. Focusing on “nurturance needs” activates a willingness in the client to explore multiple strength-building pathways to overcome obstacles in the service of creating beneficial personal and life transformation.

In Transformational Journaling for Coaches, Therapists, and ClientsA Complete Guide to the Benefits of Personal Writing, more than 50 coaches, therapists, and journaling experts from around the world share their best practices and explain in detail how they use journaling to improve their work with clients.

My contribution: Creating Change in Three Steps (also known as HOPES Up in 3!)

This edited collection brings together the leading voices of the journaling world into one ground-breaking volume, providing practical techniques and tools to use with clients. Applicable and accessible, over 50 journaling luminaries share their experiences and insights across eight sections, including the logic of journaling, techniques and applications, using journaling with clients, journaling in groups, journaling for mental health and wellness, growth and healing, spirituality, creativity, and more.

Through theoretical and practical applications, it illustrates the transformational process of journaling in helping clients grow, heal, and achieve their goals.

This book is essential reading for coaches, therapists, and other mental health professionals, as well as those interested in using personal writing for growth and self-awareness.

Today I did a coaching session on myself. I have been struggling with a lot of things lately. I started asking the wrong question of myself ” What is wrong with me?” After a few times of this I remembered something I told someone who asked that same question of themselves. If you keep asking what is wrong with you, it is like your mind will go searching for all the wrong things it can find. Why not ask what is right with you? So with all the strength I could muster today I willed myself to change the question to: “What is right with me?” It is easier to do when emotions are not so heightened….But I did it. I am very grateful for what I call the energy of unconditional love whispering in my ear what I needed to hear to change & I am grateful for my ability to hear & willingness to try. I hope to engage more wisdom & to find more clients with a willingness to try & work with the energy of transformation.
